How to Style Open Shelves without Looking Cluttered

The current trend in modern homes is open shelving. From living rooms to kitchens, and all the way to bedrooms.

But without the right styling, you can make these shelves look more chaotic than curated.

With a few simply styling tricks, your shelves can look effortlessly put-together while still being functional.

1. Start with a blank canvas

Take everything off your shelves before you begin. This can make it easier to edit what you really want to put on display.

2. Stick to a colour palette

Choose 2-3 complementary colours (plus neutrals) and repeat them throughout your display. This will create cohesion and prevent your shelves from looking like a random collection of stuff.

3. Mix height and shapes

Stack your books horizontally, stand some vertically, and add in objects of different sizes. Variation of things like vases, candles, or framed photos can keep the eye moving.

4. Leave breathing space

You don’t have to fill every inch of the shelf. Negative space is just as important as the objects you choose. This can keep things from looking overcrowded.

5. Balance function and style

If your shelfs double as storage, hide the “not so pretty” items in boxes or baskets, and use the open areas for décor.

Pro Tip: Style in odd numbers for the most natural look.
