How to move heavy furniture without damaging it (or your back)

Whether it’s a lounge you scored at a WFC sale event or you’re rearranging your space, moving heavy furniture requires more than muscle. It takes a lot of thought and a safe approach for both you and your furniture.

Here’s how you can move your heavy furniture without scratching floors or hurting yourself.

1. Plan the path

Before lifting anything:

  • Clear the space.
  • Measure hallways, doorways, and stairs.
  • Remove any rugs, cords, items that could be a trip hazard.
  • Plan the corners and pivots in advance.

Don’t wing it, a clear route is key to a clean move.

2. Break it down where possible

Take off everything you can before you lift.

  • Remove cushions, drawers, and detachable legs
  • Disassemble bed frames, table tops, or modular lounges if possible
  • Wrap parts in blankets or towels to avoid scratches

This will help reduce weight and make pieces less awkward to carry.

3. Protect the furniture and the floors

Forget about getting expensive gear for moving furniture. Here’s some handy tips:

  • Towels, blankets, or bubble wrap work great for padding on the corners and edges of your furniture
  • Slide, don’t drag! Furniture sliders, felt pads, or even old towels work great on hard floors
  • If you’re moving on carpet, try cardboard or plastic sliders.
  • If you’re loading a vehicle, make sure you secure items with straps or rope to stop them shifting around in transit.

4. Lift Strong AND Smart

  • Lift with your legs, not your back
  • Keep your back straight and hold the furniture close to your body
  • Use moving straps if available, especially for tight staircases or award angles.
  • Ask for help! Even light items can turn dangerous if lifted in the wrong way.

5. Watch for wall damage

It isn’t just about the item. Protect your space as much as possible!

  • Cover sharp edges with padding
  • Be cautions when pivoting tall pieces around tight corners
  • For tight hallways, stand taller items upright and slide along one edge.

When buying your new furniture at WFC, you’re sure to want to get it into the home in one piece. Ask our team about size, access, and delivery options before you buy.

If you’re planning to DIY your move, come prepared. A little planning goes a long way.
