Neutrals never go out of style. But not all neutrals are created equal.

Neutral secrets lie in the undertones. Choosing between warm and cool neutrals can be the difference between a space that feels cosy and one that feels crisp.

UNDERSTANDING UNDERTONES

When going with warm neutrals think cream, beige and taupe as warm neutrals carry those hints of yellow, red, or orange.

Cool neutrals on the other hand lean into blue, grey, or green undertones. These colours could be stone, charcoal, or crisp white.

To identify the undertones of colours, hold a white sheet of paper next to your wall or furniture in daylight. The subtle hue will be able to tell you which way it leans.

WARM NEUTRALS

You want to go warm if you’re wanting to make your space feel inviting.

  • Works beautifully with timber floors, tan leathers, or brass accents.
  • Ideal for north-facing rooms or spaces with cooler light.
  • Creates an earthy, natural look when paired with organic materials

COOL NEUTRAL

Perfect for modern and costal interiors.

  • Think whitewashed oak, grey upholstery, and chrome details
  • Keeps those bright rooms feeling fresh and open
  • Best paired with blue, green, or monochrome accents.

MIXING THE TWO

You can combine both warm and cool neutrals. The key is balance. Use one undertone as the base, and then layer the other through textiles or accessories. For example: You can have a cool grey lounge and pair it with warm tan cushions.

FINAL TIP

Always check colours at different times of day. The same “grey” can look beige in morning light and blue at night.
