Shape matters more than you think.
A dining table is more than its namesake. It’s where you gather, work, celebrate, and probably fold the laundry.
At our WFC Clearance Events, we see customers gravitate towards two main shapes: Round dining tables and rectangle dining tables. Both have their own strengths, and the right choice depends on your space, style, and lifestyle.
Let’s look at the two dining table types.
Round Dining Table: The Social Circle
Circular dining tables create more intimate, everyone-can-see everyone setting.
Round dining tables are best for:
- Small to medium dining spaces
- Square or awkward-shaped rooms
- People who love those long, chatty meals
Pros:
- Conversation friendly – you won’t have anyone stuck at the end of the table (because there isn’t one)
- Space-saving corners – perfect for the tighter layouts in the home
- Safer edges – perfect for families with young kids, and people sick of banging their hip on the corner of their square dining table.
Things to look out for:
- Limited seating for large groups
- Harder to place against a wall if you need to save floor space
Pro-tip: A pedestal base gives you more leg room and can make it easier to squeeze in extra chairs when needed.
Rectangle Dining Table: The Classic Entertainer
Long, rectangular dining tables are the most common dining table shape.
- Rectangle dining tables are best for:
- Medium to large dining rooms
- Open-plan spaces
- Families who host big gatherings
Pros:
- More seating availability – making this the idea for hosting and holiday dinners
- Easy placement – they can run along a wall or wind if needed
- End seating – Perfect for a “head of the table” feel
Things to look out for:
- Rectangle dining tables can dominate a small room
- Corners are a bump hazard in small, tight spaces.
Pro tip: Bench seating on one or both sides can make a rectangle table more flexible and compact when it isn’t in use.
Which one should you choose?
Choose the round dining table if you want better conversation flow, have smaller dining space available, or need kid (and hip) friendly edges.
Choose the rectangle dining table if you often host, have a larger dining area, or need maximum seating.
Try before you buy.
The best way you can find “the one” is to see it in person.
At our WFC Clearance Events you can:
- Test different sizes and finishes
- Check how many chairs can fit comfortably
- Compare clearance prices on both styles.
